Hamlet Skull Shakespeare mentalThe 2016 World Shakespeare Congress – four hundred years after the playwright’s death – will celebrate Shakespeare’s memory and the global cultural legacy of his works.

The 2016 hosts – in Stratford, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, and the University of Birmingham’s Shakespeare Institute; in London, Shakespeare’s Globe and the London Shakespeare Centre, King’s College London – look forward to welcoming delegates and their partners and families from around the world.

The organisers expect to receive a record number of delegates to a range of cultural and intellectual opportunities in the place where Shakespeare was born, acted, wrote and died. The organisres further add that they would like to share in reflecting on the place of Shakespeare in cultural memory, in Stratford and London in the summer of 2016.

The World Shakespeare Congress 2016 also absorbs, for 2016, the International Shakespeare Conference  held at the University of Birmingham’s Shakespeare Institute. This bi-annual conference is held at the Institute as an international gathering of around 230 leading Shakespeare scholars. It was initiated at Mason Croft in the 1940s under the auspices of the British Council. It is reported that all details of the seminars, workshop and panel programme will be published in May 2016 on this website. Plenary announcements will be made later in 2015. The organisers request register in advance, as the Early Bird Rate will expire on 1 February, 2016. For further information visit www.wsc2016.info

The organisers point out that World Shakespeare Congress 2016 delegates may attend one seminar or workshop, which must be registered for in advance. Involvement in a seminar or workshop will mean working as part of a group in the run up to the Congress. Registration can be completed online.  Registration will involve selecting three seminar titles, in the order of preference. Seminar places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. The Congress Committee will endeavour to place all applicants within their  first option, and where this is not possible, in their  second, and subsequently, their  third option.
