On Wednesday, Heathrow’s £2.5bn new Terminal 2 received its first passengers from Chicago at around 5:55am.

The design of the new terminal marks a significant achievement in British construction, and is one of Europe’s largest sculptures.

Only 17 flights, all from the US carrier United Airlines, were due in on Wednesday as Heathrow planned a slow and smooth opening to banish memories of the debacle of the opening of Terminal 5 in 2008, reported the Guardian .

The passengers were ushered through the immigration before collecting their bags.

According to John Holland-Kaye, the chief executive-in-waiting of Heathrow said that it’s a good thing to start with a phased rollout.

The passengers found the new terminal which has transformed from a revolutionary check-in technology, to the spectacular wave-roof as “pretty cool”.
