Yvette Cooper’s campaign to become Labour leader gathers momentum as more MPs including senior leader Virendra Sharma endorsed the shadow home secretary. Besides Sharma, – Shabana Mahmood, Seema Malhotra and Khalid Mahmood are supporting Cooper’s campaign.
Former cabinet minister Liam Byrne, Mr Sharma among several senior leaders support Cooper in the four horse race to become the Labour leader. Other contenders are Liz Kendall, Andy Burnham and Mary Creagh.
The new additions now now make Cooper the front-runner in terms of number of MPs with 28 followed by Burnham’s 25, Kendall with 21 and Mary Creagh with 5 MPs.
A campaign spokeswoman said: “Yvette has support from MPs across the country and from all sections of the Party. We will be announcing more endorsers in the coming days.”
Under party rules, at least 15% of the Parliamentary Labour Party have to nominate a candidate before they can be formally put through to the leadership or deputy leadership election.
