For the oncoming winter and all that it entails, the Islamic charity Muslim Aid has initiated #RuckSackChallen ge to assist people who sleep and live rough on the streets…writes YZ Patel
Volunteers all over England are wanted to fill and distribute a rucksack with essential items such as gloves, hats, sleeping bag, fleece, socks, books, tooth paste and easy to open tinned food.
The number of rough sleepers is mounting yearly across England. In Manchester, around 13,650 became homeless in 2013 due to evictions by landlords. Unemployment and cuts to welfare as well as local authority budgets has made many people homeless. They are particularly vulnerable during winter months as they have little or no resources to keep warm due to poverty.
One volunteer Adnan from Manchester has uploaded a video on the Muslim Aid Facebook page which has already had over 24000 views hoping to inspire others.
In the video Adnan talks to a homeless man who sleeps rough on the streets of Manchester. He then proceeds to give him the winter survival kit of a blanket, jumper, scarf and sleeping bag. Informing all people in need whatever creed or colour that Muslim Aid is ready to help.
