Christie’s Indian auction in December

christie's logoAfter a successful Indian debut last year, international auction house Christie’s will bring works of modern Indian masters like Jehangir Sabavala and Tyeb Mehta for its second auction here Dec 11, the organisers said Tuesday.

The sale will comprise 80 lots from the best of modern and contemporary art that will include Sabavala’s 1974 masterpiece “The Green Cape” which is estimated between Rs. 1,20,00,000-Rs.1,80,00,000 ($195,000-$293,000).

An early work by Mehta, entitled “Girl in Love” from 1957, is estimated between Rs.70,00,000-Rs. 90,00,000 and Bhupen Khakhar’s “Untitled” reverse painting on glass from the 1970s is estimated between Rs.40,00,000-Rs.60,00,000.

“These initial highlights shed light on a critical period in the development of Indian modernism and of the artists’ oeuvres as well,” said a statement.

Alongside these masterpieces, a separate section of striking contemporary works by artists including Subodh Gupta, Rashid Rana, Mithu Sen, Thukral and Tagra, Nilima Sheikh and Bharti Kher will be offered to benefit the Delhi based Khoj International Artists Association, a well-known artist residency.

According to the organisers, all the artists have donated works to Khoj exclusively for this sale.

A selection of works will be also publicly previewed in the national capital at The Taj Mahal Hotel Nov 28 to 30.
