The BJP has decided it will not form a government in Delhi and fresh polls should be held, party sources said .

BJP sources said Delhi BJP President Satish Upadhyay met Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung.

Upadhyay, according to sources, conveyed BJP’s point of view in the meeting.

The LG’s office, however, refused to comment.

Jung will Monday meet representatives from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress to decide on government formation. Though Upadhyay met the Lt governor in the morning, the BJP is also scheduled to meet Najeeb Jung in the evening.

BJP sources added they expect the election to be held by February next year.

The BJP-Shiromani Akali Dal combine has 29 seats in the 70-member Delhi Assembly.

The alliance won 32 seats in the December elections, short of a majority. Since then, three BJP legislators were elected to the Lok Sabha in the general elections.

AAP, the second largest party, has 28 legislators.

Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung invited all parties to discuss the possibility of government formation in Delhi, informed sources said.

“We have been called at 5.45 p.m.,” Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia said.

Congress legislator Haroon Yusuf also confirmed receiving Jung’s invite and said they are likely to meet him at 3.45 p.m.

Sources in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the single largest party in the Delhi assembly, said that their meeting is likely to be held Monday evening at Raj Bhavan.

Jung Oct 29 said he would meet all party leaders to discuss the possibility of government formation in the capital.

The development came a day after the Supreme Court expressed displeasure at the central government’s delay in ensuring a new government in Delhi which has been under President’s Rule since Feb 17.

The national capital has been without an elected government since February, when the AAP government quit.

After three BJP legislators were elected to the Lok Sabha in May, the effective strength of the assembly came down to 67 from the original 70.

The BJP’s tally also got reduced to 28 from 31. It has the support of a lone Akali Dal legislator.

After expelling Vinod Kumar Binny from the party, the AAP is left with 27 legislators.

The Congress has eight legislators. There is one independent legislator and one from the Janata Dal-United.
