Amjad Ali Khan due in UK

Sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan is to play on 21 June at 8pm in the Great Hall as part of the 2014 Tagore Festival at Dartington – which brings Anglo-Asian performers together to celebrate peace-building past and present at the centenary of the start of World War One.

Recognised as ‘one of the 20th century’s greatest masters of the sarod’, Amjad Ali Khan has been revered worldwide as a master of the sarod since making his international debut in the US over fifty years ago. His lute-like instrument, named literally for its ‘beautiful sound’, gives the distinctive tonal flavour to north Indian classical music.amjad ali khanKhan will bring his beautiful sound to the rolling Devon hills in Playing for Peace on 21 June at 8pm in the Great Hall. Guests are invited to stay overnight at Dartington Hall in an Asian Lite Tagore Festival Package. Khan’s music is inextricably linked to the peace movement. In 1999, Khan inaugurated the World Festival of Sacred Music with His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

He performed at the Central Hall of the Indian Parliament on the commemoration of India’s 60th year of Independence in 2007. And on the ninth anniversary of 9/11, Khan gave a Peace Concert at the United Nations in New York in the presence of the UN Secretary General Ban-Ki-Moon.
Festival goers will also be treated to performances by tabla player Talvin Singh, peace and environmental activist Satish Kumar, singer Param Vir, filmmaker Sangeeta Datta, Javed Aktar & Zoe Rahman, Professor Sukanta Chaudhuri, Dr Kalyan Kundu, Swagatalakshmi Omblivion, Director of Bhavan Centre Dr Nandakumara and Dr Prarthana Purkayastha.
The Tagore Festival was established by peace and environmental activist Satish Kumar in 2011 to celebrate Rabindranath Tagore’s (1861-1941) enduring legacy at the Dartington Hall Trust.
