Keith Vaz, Member of Parliament for Leicester East and Chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee, has declared his support for Yvette Cooper in the Labour Party Leadership contest.
Keith Vaz in a statement said: “Yvette is the stand out candidate from an impressive selection of hopeful Labour Leaders. Her record in government and shadow government is incredibly impressive. She knows our political system inside out, and would hit the ground running in building a modern, progressive Labour movement.
“After seeing Yvette in action at the BAME Hustings in Harrow on 26th June, where she committed to double the number of ethnic minority MPs, I know she understands this Party at the grassroots level.
“This is what makes her unique. We have a candidate who is extraordinary at the dispatch box, and is then smashing on the dancefloor every year at Labour’s Diversity Night.
“I have worked with Yvette for many years, including on the demanding Home Affairs agenda, and I can think of no person more effective, more determined, or as politically intuitive as Yvette Cooper. She is ready lead our Party into the 2020 election, and then back into government.”
