As part of the birth anniversary celebrations of Verghese Kurien, father of the White Revolution in India, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will Nov 26 launch the National Programme for Dairy Development for Kerala’s dairy farmers here.

The National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDP) will be launched with an aim to create and strengthen infrastructure for the production of quality milk, linking the farmer to the consumer, procurement, processing and marketing of milk, and training of dairy farmers besides increasing milk production by providing technical input services.

The Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. (KCMMF), popularly called Milma, the main agency that takes care of the dairy needs of the state, will organise the events for the day.

“Milma plans to put in place a scientific approach and systematic processes that will help Kerala contribute towards improving the genetics of milk producing animals in a consistent and continuous manner, improve the quality of milk being marketed, and contribute to improving the livelihoods of small-holder milk producers, who are the bedrock of our milk production system,” said P.K. Pathak, managing director of Milma.

All the 14 Milma dairies across the state will be opened to the general public on Nov 26 and 27 to enable them view the operations in a dairy plant.

Special sales outlets for Milma products at heavily subsidised rates will also be set up on the day.
