US President Barack Obama met Ukrainian President-elect Petro Poroshenko in the Polish capital city Wednesday.
It was Obama’s first meeting with Poroshenko, who was elected president of Ukraine May 25 and will be officially sworn-in June 7.
The US president said he discussed a plan of bringing back peace and economic growth to Ukraine with Poroshenko.
Both presidents also discussed ways to reduce Ukraine’s energy dependence on Russia.
Poroshenko said, “I want to thank the president for the support in our initiative in reforming the energy sector,” while highlighting “future cooperation in the anti-corruption deal” as “crucially important”.
Before meeting with Obama, Poroshenko met US Secretary of State John Kerry.
