Phillip Hughes remains in a critical condition after being hit in the head by a bouncer and will have scans, doctors said Wednesday.

“Phillip Hughes remains in a critical condition in St. Vincent’s Hospital after being struck in the head. He will have scans this morning and a further update will be provided when the results of those scans are known,” Peter Brukner, Australian team doctor, said in a statement.

Hughes is in an induced coma in intensive care and has undergone a surgery Tuesday to relieve pressure on his brain.

The 25-year-old collapsed on the ground while batting after being hit by a rising delivery from pacer Sean Abbott in a Sheffield Shield match for South Australia against New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground Tuesday.

The cricketing community expressed shock at the development and tributes continue to flow in for the batsman from the around the world.

“Phil is fighting hard and we are with him in this fight. My prayers with him, his family and friends,” Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar tweeted Wednesday while former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist alos extended his support for the injured batsman.

‘Dear Lord, if (there was) ever the need for footprints in the sand, it’s now,’ Gilchrist wrote on Twitter.

As a result of the horrific incident, Cricket Australia  confirmed the abandonment of current round of Sheffield Shield matches.
