Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday arrived at the Jammu airport here, specially to conduct an aerial survey of the flood-ravaged areas of Jammu and Kashmir.

Modi was received by Governor N.N. Vohra and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

Accompanied by army chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag, Modi will conduct the aerial survey of the flood-affected areas of the Jammu region.

He will then fly to the Kashmir Valley to inspect the damage the floods, the worst the state has seen in 60 years, have caused.

Over 100 people have died in Jammu and Kashmir due to floods.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday announced a special assistance of Rs.1,000 crore for the flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir besides a Rs.2 lakh compensation from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for the kin of the dead and Rs.50,000 for those seriously injured.

Modi, who took an aerial view of the flood-affected Jammu and Srinagar regions, said the current crisis was a “national level disaster”.

He assured the people of the state that they were not alone in this crisis.

“I would like to assure the people of the state that it is not their crisis alone. It is a crisis for the whole country,” Modi said.

The prime minister also offered to extend all possible help to the flood-affected people in the Pakistan-administerd Kashmir.

“India will never hesitate from doing work of humanity,” Modi said, adding the government was prepared to help the people of Pakistan-administered Kashmir in every capacity.

Over 100 people have died in floods in the state due to incessant rainfall during the week.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) Sunday started a massive aerial relief and rescue operation in flood affected regions of Jammu and Kashmir.

“A total of 850 personnel have been airlifted so far in the flood affected regions of the state,” a defence ministry statement said here.

“One C-17 Globemaster aircraft has been launched from Delhi to Awantipur with RAMT (Rapid Action Medical Team), two IL-76 aircraft with medical supplies and boats have taken off from Palam Air Force Base for Srinagar,” it said.

“One IL-76 with teams of NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) personnel has also taken off from Palam. Three C-130J Super Hercules special operations aircrafts have been pressed into service to transport boats from Pune and Gandhinagar to Srinagar and blankets and tents from Kanpur to Jammu and Srinagar,” it said.

Many IAF transport aircraft have been pressed into operations. A total of 26 IAF helicopters are operating in the floot-hit regions of the state.
